Katowice – the cultural heart of Upper Silesia


Katowice is one of the most important economic and academic centres in Poland, as well as being the administrative centre of the province of Silesia. Katowice has two things in abundance, namely churches and museums. The Church of the Immaculate Conception is a Catholic church built between 1862 and 1870. It is the first and only Catholic church that has been preserved in an otherwise protestant city.

Also worth a visit is the city palace on Wolność Square, dating back to the second half of the 19th century, or the famous “Silesian Museum”.

Finding your way to and from the airport

By car:

The airport is around 30 km north of Katowice. Take the S86 and then turn off onto the S1 towards Pyrzowice. For a map showing how to get there click here.

Bus:

The airport is served by scheduled buses from the public transport system. There are direct connections to Bytom (bus numbers 85 and 53), to Mierzęcice (number 17) and the centre of Katowice (Airport Bus). Journey time is around 50 minutes.
There is also a shuttle service to Katowice, which runs in sync with the Germanwings flight schedule.

Taxi:

There are always taxis outside the terminal building. Fares to Katowice are around 20 €.

Hire cars:

There are centrally-located Sixt and Avis rental locations at all Germanwings destinations. Reserve a car here and get great bargains.

At the airport

Katowice International Airport (Międzynarodowy Port Lotniczy Katowice) is located near the town of Pyrzowice, around 30 km north of Katowice. Since Poland’s accession to the EU air traffic in the region has increased considerably. On the 9th July 2007 a new Terminal B was opened in Katowice.

Parking:

Katowice Airport has attended and unattended parking spaces and multi-storey car parks.
