Osijek is in the eastern part of the historic Croatian region of Slavonia on the right bank of the river Drava, around 22 km from where it meets the Danube. As the largest city in eastern Croatia Osijek is nowadays an important cultural, economic and transport centre. The city is divided into several self-contained hubs, including the Upper Town (Gornji grad), the Tvrda fortress, the Lower Town (Donji grad), the new town (Novi Grad), as well as the Retfale district. Important institutions in Osijek include the university, the Croatian National Theatre, the Museum of Slavonia, the zoo, a centre for the promotion of livestock breeding and an institute for sugar beet farming.
